The problem-solving court parts model was developed in New York City criminal courts over twenty years ago with the goal to eschew traditional models of prosecution in favor of a results-oriented approach that focused more on the needs of individuals facing criminal charges. Today there are dozens of specialized court parts throughout New York City Criminal Courts. Representing immigrants in these court parts requires an understanding of the nuances of the procedure of the specialized court part model and unique considerations around some of the models of judicial diversion that have been used in these parts. This training will provide a brief review of specialized court parts in New York City and how a case could end up there, teach defense attorneys some of the considerations that could come up for immigrant clients in these court parts and strategies for resolving the criminal case.
